Portuguese Sweet Bread
(Recipe by Virginia Deluz)

2 cups milk, scalded
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 block butter
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs, well beaten
2 pkg. dry yeast
7 cups flour
1/4 cup lukewarm water for yeast
with 1/2 tsp. sugar
Pour scalded milk into large bowl. Stir in sugar, salt, and butter. Let stand to lukewarm.
Blend in eggs and vanilla. Add yeast mixture, and stir in enough flour to make a soft dough.
Knead dough until smooth and not sticky. Cover and place in warm area. Let rise for 1-1/2 hours and knead down again. Cover and let rise again for another 1-1/2 hours.
Spread onto a floured kitchen towel and shape into loaves or a round shape.
Place in buttered pans and bake at 275-300 degrees for 1 hour or until golden brown
