Since March, 1996, the Hawaii Island Portuguese Chamber of
Commerce (HIPCC) has been a member of the Association of Portuguese-American
Chambers of Commerce (APACC). Members of this group
are listed above. Click on a location for details.
APACC is headquartered
in Lisbon, Portugal, under the guidance of President Henrique M. Broto de Rio,
and is funded primarily by the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD), with
small assessments made by participating member organizations. The primary
mandate of APACC is the development of mutually prosperous economic, commercial,
and cultural relations between the participating members.
At the APACC conference held in Garden City, New York on May 2/4, 1999, and
attended by HIPCC board members Richard Toledo and Edward Andrade, the Following
goals were established:
-
Improve and standardize
the communications between APACC members through the
creation of an APACC website. This will include
websites for individual member organizations and links to
other organizations involved in relations between the U.S.
and the European Union. Access will be provided to as
many as 18,000 companies throughout North America and
Europe.
-
Attempt to promote the
economic and cultural relations between North America and
Portugal through the use of ethnic communities.
-
Develop a protocol between
the Portuguese Trade Commission (ICEP) and APACC for a more
efficient use of available resources of different
Portuguese-American communities.
-
Create an APACC Government
Relations Committee with the intent to keep the governments
informed of the legitimate concerns of the
Portuguese-American communities.
-
Reinforce the
collaboration between APACC and American institutions of
education with respect to expanding the knowledge of the
Portuguese language and culture. This could be done
through student exchanges.
-
Develop an APACC brochure
that will give detailed information about the activities and
services of the member organizations.
The HIPCC boards of
directors looks forward to helping in the achievement of
these goals and continue building relationships that could
prove to be beneficial to our members with other APACC
members.
The
Luso-American Development Foundation has provided member organizations with
grants to attend the APACC conferences. Conferences have been held in
Lisbon, Portugal; San Jose, California; San Miguel, Azores; Fall River,
Massachusetts; and Garden City, New York
