Ukulele brought to Hawaii by the Portuguese

The UKULELE is not an original Hawaiian instrument.
It was brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants from Madeira in the 1800's and is known as the Braguinha in Madeira and as the Cavaquinho in other areas of Portugal.
The small four-stringed guitar was given it's Hawaiian name UKULELE which means "jumping flea".  In Hawaii, it is also called a "uke".
