After much preparation and anticipation, our 2011 Dennis G. Aguiar Portuguese Day in the park was held under beautiful Hilo skies.
Excitement was in the air amid the aroma of burning ohia logs in the forno (Portuguese stone oven) fresh malasadas and home-style bean soup.

Under chairmanship of Margo Aguiar the event started promptly at 9:00 AM when the booths opened, providing samples, and selling home-made Portuguese sweet bread, Portuguese sausage, and cebolas (Portuguese pickled onion).  The Portuguese Culture Club cooked their delicious malasadas on the spot.  Can't get it any fresher than that.  The Portuguese hot dogs were quite popular and there was much interest in the genealogy booth.

Several hundred people attended the 4 hour event and it was refreshing to see an increased number of younger couples and their children enjoying the food and festivities.

The Hawaii County band played our National Anthem, and Hawaii Pono'i followed by a repertoire of Portuguese and other island favorites while a long line formed in anticipation of  Linus Tavares' sensational home made Portuguese Bean Soup, which was served with fresh home-made traditional Portuguese white bread freshly baked in the onsite forno (Portuguese stone oven).
